What is demi-permanent color?
Demi-permanent hair color is basically the goldilocks of hair dye :) It's not nearly as harsh and won't leave roots like permanent color, but it will provide much longer lasting color than semi-permanent, deposit-only color. How does it work? Demi-permanent color is ammonia-free and mixed with a low volume developer - it penetrates the outer cuticle of your hair, creating a coating of color that gradually washes away in about 4-6 weeks (or 25 washes). -

Totally Clean Bleach
-
How do I prepare my hair for bleaching?
Ensure your hair is dry, unshampooed, detangled, and has not been washed for two days prior to bleaching. This helps in reducing scalp sensitivity. Refer to the insert in your package and read all directions and warnings before application. -
How do I apply the bleach?
Start at the crown of your head and work in small sections using a hair applicator brush. Fully saturate each section and apply bleach to the roots last, as they lift quicker. Avoid applying bleach directly on the scalp. Refer to the insert in your package and read all directions and warnings before application. -
How long should I leave the bleach in my hair?
Leave the bleach in your hair for 35-45 minutes. Check the condition of your hair every 10 minutes by wiping a small section with a gloved hand. Do not exceed 45 minutes. Refer to the insert in your package and read all directions and warnings before application. -
What should I do after bleaching my hair?
Rinse your hair thoroughly with lukewarm water to remove all bleach. Follow up with shampoo and use the included deep conditioner to restore moisture. Refer to the insert in your package and read all directions and warnings before application. -
Are there any safety precautions I should follow?
Perform a skin allergy test 48 hours before each use of Totally Clean Bleach, as allergies can develop suddenly, even though you have previously used this product or similar products from other brands in the past. Do not use on damaged or brittle hair, and do not mix with metal utensils or containers. Refer to the insert in your package and read all directions and warnings before application. -
How do I perform a skin allergy test?
Mix a small amount of bleach and developer, apply it to a cleaned area inside your elbow, and let it sit for 48 hours without washing. Check for any signs of irritation or reaction. Refer to the insert in your package and read all directions and warnings before application. -
Can I use this product if I have previously treated or colored hair?
Do not use on hair that has been previously bleached, highlighted, or treated with color restorers, metallic dyes, or henna. -
What should I do if the product gets into my eyes?
Rinse immediately with lukewarm water and seek medical help if irritation persists, especially if you wear contact lenses. -
How should I store the unused product?
Store the product at room temperature (50°F to 80°F). Do not store any mixed but unused product as it could burst the container. -
Can I bleach just my roots with this product?
Yes, if you're only doing your roots or need less product, mix one part bleach to 1.5 parts developer. Do not apply over previously bleached hair to avoid damage.
Before You Use Color Cloud
-
How should I prepare to color?
We always recommend you do a sensitivity test before coloring your hair 48 hours before coloring. Also, wash your hair 24 hours in advance. The day after you shampoo is the best for coloring :) -
How do I perform a strand test?
Mix a few drops of the color and foaming developer (1:1.5 ratio) together in a small container. Wear gloves and apply to a strand of hair. Let the color process for 30 minutes. Rinse and dry to see the color. -
Should I wash my hair before coloring?
It is not necessary to wash your hair before coloring. If you have styling products such as mousse or gel in your hair, comb it through before coloring to remove any excess product. If you use a wax-based product it needs to be washed out before you color because it could prevent the color from absorbing into your hair.Always begin coloring with dry hair. -
Should I perform an allergy test (patch test)?
Yes, an allergen patch test is always a good idea. Mix a few drops of the color and foaming developer (1:1.5 ratio) together in a small container. Use a cotton swab to apply a small amount to a clean patch skin on your arm. Keep the area dry for 48 hours. If there’s no reaction, you’re ready to color. -
I think my color froze outside. Is it still ok to use?
Yes. If anything freezes, it is advisable to wait until it comes to room temperature before use. The color bottle should be kept closed at all times except for when it’s being mixed with the developer. -
How often can I color my hair?
We recommend you wait at least 1-2 weeks between hair color applications. -
How long does the Color Cloud last opened and unopened?

Color Cloud & My Hair
-
Can you use Color Cloud on natural virgin hair?
Yes! Color Cloud is safe on all hair types. Pro Tip: Color the baby hairs around your scalp and neck last, as they dye the fastest! -
My hair is pretty damaged, can I still use Color Cloud?
All hair will react differently to demi-permanent hair color but know that Color Cloud uses a gentle, ammonia-free formula that is infused with nourishing natural extracts. We do recommend waiting at least 1-2 weeks in between any permanent hair color treatments. -
My hair has been chemically treated (permed, relaxed, etc.), can I still use Color Cloud?
Yes, if your hair is chemically treated you can use Color Cloud. We recommend waiting two weeks to color after your last chemical treatment. -
I have long hair, how many boxes of permanent color do I need?
Color Cloud permanent hair color kits contain enough foam to color shoulder length hair. If your hair is quite long (well past mid-back length) or very thick, one Color Cloud kit may not be enough and we recommend you get two to ensure evenly applied color. -
Can I use Color Cloud if I have henna in my hair?
Henna works by coating the hair shaft with color, which makes it difficult for traditional hair color to penetrate through and deposit new color. We do not recommend coloring over hair that has henna on it and think that you’ll be happier with the results if you wait until the henna is completely grown out. -
I have highlights. Can I use Color Cloud?
Color Cloud is a gentle demi-permanent color that is formulated to give an all over color result. It is likely your existing highlights will become more blended after use. -
Will Color Cloud lighten or bleach hair?
Color Cloud does not contain bleach. If your starting shade is darker than the dye shade you selected, our ammonia-free formula can subtly lighten hair up to two shades. Color Cloud contains a gentle hydrogen peroxide-based foaming developer. -
Can I use Color Cloud on wigs or extensions?
Yes, Color Cloud is safe for use on all human hair wigs and extensions. Note that color outcomes may vary depending on the type of hair wig or extensions. As with any extensions, if yours are attached to your head (as opposed to being clip-ins), be careful to avoid getting dye on the attachments. -
Can I use Color Cloud on my eyebrows and eyelashes?
NO. Color Cloud should NOT be used on your eyebrows or eyelashes. We recommend completely avoiding contact on and around your eyes as much as possible. -
Can I use Color Cloud on animals?
We do NOT recommend using Color Cloud on any of our furry friends! -
Will Color Cloud work on my hair?
Color Cloud works on all hair types and textures and is curl-friendly! Final color results will vary depending on your starting shade (for example if your hair is brown, Rose Gold will give you a much more subtle pink than it would on a platinum blonde). -
Should I use a specific shampoo and conditioner for color treated hair?
After dying your hair, shampoo and conditioner for color treated hair is a good idea and will help your hair color last longer. Look for products that are sulfate free.
Color Cloud How-To & Results
-
How do I apply Color Cloud hair color?
If you have longer hair, we recommend that you section your hair into three parts using your Clippies (included in the Sidekick bag). Start by lathering the foam into the bottom section and gradually move up to the middle and top sections. Release each clip when you lather that section. Pro-Tip: Don’t forget the stray hairs around your hairline and the back of your neck.
Watch a 60 second tutorial HERE! -
How do I section my hair?
Before you begin coloring, split your hair into three sections. Use your Clippies to make two top buns (think Princess Leia) and keep the bottom section loose. -
How do I color the back of my hair?
You got this! Color Cloud foam is super easy to lather and apply. Use your clippies to keep the top part of your hair out of your way, and lather the loose hair in the back until it is completely saturated and your hair is no longer dry. -
When do I start timing my processing time?
You should begin your 30 minute timer once you have completed the full application. -
I’m worried about my roots! How do I avoid “hot roots”?
“Hot roots” is a term used to describe when the roots of your hair get overly lightened/brassy. This can sometimes happen because the heat from your scalp can cause your roots to respond faster to hair color than the mid-lengths and ends. Avoiding this problem is easy, just follow our protip of coloring the crown of your head closest to your scalp LAST, as it needs less processing time. You can also leave a small space between the scalp of your head and where you start applying the foam on your hair for extra precaution. -
What happens if I rinse Color Cloud hair color out earlier than instructed?
Make sure to follow all instructions carefully. If you rinse out the color before the instructed time, you may not achieve your desired hair color. -
What happens if I leave in Color Cloud hair color for too long?
If you leave the color on for too long, this may result in a hair color that is either darker or lighter than anticipated depending on what shade of dye you are using. Make sure to read all instructions carefully before beginning the application process. -
Will it stain my sink and towels?
Color Cloud is a demi-permanent color formula, and for this reason it can sometimes cause staining. If the formula comes in contact with your sink, countertops, or floors, wipe it away immediately. When you rinse your color in the shower, make sure that your water rinses clear before washing your hair after coloring. If dye gets on towels or clothing we recommend washing them right away to make sure the color comes out! -

How long will my color last?
Color Cloud is a gentle demi-permanent hair color and will begin to fade and grow out in 4-6 weeks (depending how often you wash your hair). -
Will Color Cloud cover my grays?
Color Cloud might cover your grays but 100% gray coverage is not guaranteed. Foam hair color is easy to apply and mess-free, but is not the best type of dye for heavy, stubborn grays. -
Can I use more than one color at a time?
We don’t recommend it, but if you’re feeling extra adventurous just make sure you keep the proportions of the shade color and foaming developer 1:1.5. -
What can I do to get a larger color payoff?
Reapply anything left over in your bottle after 20-25 minutes and let the foam sit for 10-15 more minutes. -
How do I maintain my current shade?
We recommend using the same Color Cloud shade every 4-6 weeks. -
How do I fade my color?
The color is prone to shampoo fading, especially clarifying shampoos. -
How should I discard my Color Cloud Kit?
Rinse out both bottles and recycle them immediately after use — DO NOT LEAVE MIXED PRODUCT IN THE PUMP BOTTLE FOR LONGER THAN 2 HOURS - do not save for later. The Hally Stress Buddy puddy, Bye Bye Bags under eye gels, and Clippies are yours to keep.
